In short: Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your business easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews to understand, trust and mention in the answers they write. It grows out of traditional SEO, and for a local business most of the work is the same: clear pages, accurate business details and plain answers to real customer questions.
What a generative engine is
A traditional search engine gives you a list of links and lets you choose. A generative engine writes an answer. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity Who does good kitchen remodels near me? and it reads what it can find, then writes a short reply that may name a few businesses. Google does something similar with its AI Overviews, the written summary that appears above the regular results for many searches.
GEO is the work of being one of the sources those answers draw on, and ideally one of the businesses they name.
GEO vs SEO: what’s actually different
SEO, search engine optimization, has always been about helping Google understand and show your pages. GEO shares the same foundations, so the question is less which one to choose and more what changes:
- The answer is shorter. A results page shows ten links. An AI answer might name two businesses. Being clearly described matters more.
- Questions are longer. People type a few words into Google but ask AI tools full questions, so pages that answer real questions in plain language are easier for AI to use.
- Consistency carries weight. AI tools compare what your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews and other sites say. When they agree, you’re easier to describe with confidence.
- You can’t see a ranking. There’s no simple position to check, so you have to ask the tools directly and track what they say over time.
What doesn’t change: a fast website, clear service pages, a complete Google Business Profile and real reviews still matter, for both.
What GEO looks like for a local business
For a plumber, a law office or a restaurant, GEO isn’t about tricks. It’s about making the facts about your business hard to misunderstand:
- A page for each service and each town you serve. So an AI tool can match you to emergency plumber in Yonkers, not just “plumber”.
- Plain answers on your site. Prices or how pricing works, hours, service areas, what to expect. Short, direct sentences an AI can quote.
- The same details everywhere. Business name, address, phone number and hours that match on your site, your Google profile and directories.
- A complete Google Business Profile with real reviews. One of the most visible sources of information about any local business.
- Structured data. Behind-the-scenes code on your pages that labels your business details so machines read them correctly.
- Checking the answers. Asking the AI tools about your business and your services, and fixing what they get wrong.
What to be careful about
Because GEO is new, it attracts big promises. No one controls what ChatGPT or Google’s AI says, and answers change from day to day. Be wary of anyone who promises your business will be named, or who sells shortcuts like stuffing pages with keywords or publishing hundreds of near-identical pages. Search engines and AI tools tend to ignore that kind of content, and it can hurt the rest of your site.
How Troia Digital LLC does GEO
We do this work with Athena, the AI software we built and run ourselves. Athena helps make your site easy for AI tools to read, helps build stronger pages for your services and towns, and checks what ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI answers say about your business. Our hands-on team reviews what it finds and does the work every month. You can read more on our AI search optimization page.

Frequently asked questions
What is generative engine optimization in simple terms?
It’s making your business easy for AI tools to understand and mention when they write an answer to someone’s question.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO builds on SEO. The same foundations, a clear website, a complete Google profile and consistent details, support both. GEO adds a focus on plain answers and on checking what AI tools say.
What’s the difference between GEO and AEO?
They overlap heavily. GEO is about AI tools that write answers. AEO, answer engine optimization, is about being the source of any direct answer, including Google’s answer boxes and voice assistants. See our guide to answer engine optimization.
Does GEO matter for small local businesses?
Yes. People ask AI tools for local recommendations all the time, and a small business with clear, consistent information can be described as well as a large one.
Can I do GEO myself?
Much of it, yes: keep your Google Business Profile complete, make sure your details match everywhere, and add plain answers to your website. Tracking what AI tools say over time is where software like Athena helps.
How do I check whether ChatGPT knows my business?
Ask it the way a customer would, for example Who does roof repair in Danbury?, and note what it says. Our free scan also checks whether AI tools recommend you.
