In short: To get more from your Google Business Profile, choose the most accurate main category, fill in every section, add real photos, keep your hours and details current, and ask for and reply to reviews. Stick to Google’s rules, especially using your real business name with no extra keywords. A complete, accurate, active profile gives customers what they need to choose you and gives Google a clearer picture of your business.
Why your Google Business Profile matters
For many local searches, your Business Profile is the first thing a customer sees, before your website. It shows your reviews, hours, photos and a button to call or get directions. Plenty of customers decide who to contact right there, without visiting a single website.
Google uses your profile, along with other signals, to decide which businesses to show in the map results. If you haven’t set one up yet, start with our guide on how to get your business on Google.
1. Choose the right main category
Your main category is one of the most important choices on your profile. Pick the one that best describes your core business, like “Electrician” rather than “Contractor.” Then add a few extra categories only if they truly fit services you offer. Too many loosely related categories can blur what you do.
2. Use your real business name
Your name on the profile should match your real-world name, as it appears on your sign, vehicles and paperwork. Adding your town or main service, like “Smith Plumbing Danbury Emergency Plumber,” breaks Google’s guidelines for representing your business and can get your profile suspended.
3. Fill in every section
- Services: list each service you offer, with a short description.
- Description: explain what you do, who you help and where, in plain words.
- Hours: keep them accurate, and add special hours for holidays.
- Service area: if you go to your customers, set the towns or areas you serve.
- Contact details: a phone number customers can reach, and a link to your website.
- Attributes: details like accessibility, payment options or online appointments, where they apply.
- Booking or quote link: if you take appointments or quote requests online, link to that page.
4. Add real photos, and keep adding them
Photos help customers trust you before they call. Add your logo, a cover photo, your team, your vehicles or storefront, and plenty of your actual work. Skip stock photos. Adding new photos now and then also shows your business is active.
5. Ask for reviews, and reply to every one
Reviews are one of the first things customers look at. Ask happy customers to leave one, ideally right after the job, and send them the direct review link from your profile. Reply to every review, good or bad. A calm, helpful reply to a bad review can say more about your business than the review itself.
Never buy reviews, write them yourself or offer something in return for them. Google removes reviews that break its rules and can restrict profiles that collect them.
6. Post updates
You can share updates on your profile, like a recent project, a seasonal service or a holiday schedule. Updates give customers a reason to choose you and show that the business is active. A short update with a real photo is enough.
7. Keep your details the same everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number should match on your profile, your website and directories like Bing Places, Apple Maps and Yelp. Mismatched details can confuse customers and make Google less sure which information is right.
8. Link to a strong website
Your profile and your website work together. When customers tap through, your site should load fast on a phone, make it easy to call, and have a clear page for each service. Google also looks at your website to understand your business. Our guide to local SEO explains how the pieces fit.
9. Check your performance
Your profile shows how many people found you, what they searched for, and how many called, asked for directions or visited your site. Check it every month or so to see what’s working and where to improve.
10. Protect your profile
- Use a Google account the business controls, not one tied to a past employee.
- Add a second owner or manager, so you never get locked out.
- Check your profile now and then. Anyone can suggest edits, and Google sometimes accepts them.
- Be careful with cold callers claiming to be from Google. A Business Profile is free.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I update my Google Business Profile?
Change your details as soon as anything changes, like hours or your phone number. Beyond that, adding photos, posting updates and replying to reviews regularly keeps your profile fresh.
Can I have a Google Business Profile without a storefront?
Yes. Businesses that go to their customers can set a service area and hide their address, as long as they have a real business address for verification.
Should I reply to bad reviews?
Yes. Stay calm, thank them, keep it short and offer to sort it out offline. Future customers read how you respond.
Can I remove a bad review?
Only if it breaks Google’s rules, such as spam, fake reviews or offensive content. You can report it from your profile. Reviews that are simply negative usually stay, so a thoughtful reply is your best response.
Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?
Common reasons are keywords added to the business name, an address that doesn’t qualify, duplicate profiles or major changes that Google wants to check. Fix the issue and follow Google’s steps to request a review.
