In short: If your website isn’t showing up on Google, it’s usually for one of two reasons. Either Google hasn’t added your pages to its index yet, or your pages are indexed but other sites show up ahead of them for the searches you tried. New sites, a setting that tells Google to stay away, technical errors, thin pages and strong competition are the most common causes. Google Search Console, a free tool from Google, shows which one you’re dealing with.

First, check whether Google has your site at all

Type site: followed by your web address into Google, with no space, for example site:yourbusiness.com. If pages from your site appear, Google has them in its index. If nothing appears, Google either hasn’t found your site yet or has been told not to include it.

This check isn’t perfect, but it quickly tells you which half of the problem you have. For a full picture, add your site to Google Search Console and open the Pages report, which lists the pages Google has indexed and the reasons others were left out.

If your site isn’t in Google at all

Your site is new

Google has to find a new site before it can add it, and that can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. Adding the site to Search Console and submitting a sitemap helps Google find it sooner.

Your site is telling Google to stay away

This is more common than you’d think, especially after a new site is built. A “noindex” setting on your pages, or a robots.txt file that blocks Google, will keep your site out even though everything looks fine to visitors. In WordPress, check Settings, then Reading, and make sure the box that discourages search engines from indexing the site is not ticked.

Nothing links to your site

Google finds most pages by following links. A site with no links from anywhere else, not even your Business Profile or social pages, is harder for Google to discover.

Technical errors

Server errors, broken redirects, pages that only load for some visitors, or a site that’s down when Google visits can all stop pages from being added.

A manual action from Google

Rarely, Google takes action against a site for breaking its spam rules, such as buying links or hiding text. If that’s happened, you’ll see it in Search Console under Manual actions, along with what to fix.

If your site is in Google but you can’t find it

Other sites are ahead of you

Being indexed only means Google has your page. For a search like “electrician near me,” it compares your page with every other one that could answer it, and shows the ones it judges most relevant and trusted first. A new or small site often sits on page three or four at first, which to most people feels the same as not being there.

Your pages don’t clearly match the search

If you offer a service but don’t have a clear page about it, or never mention the towns you serve, Google has little reason to show you for those searches. One page that lists everything you do is weaker than a clear page for each main service.

Your pages are thin or copied

Pages with very little useful text, or many near-identical pages with only a town name changed, may be indexed but rarely shown, or left out altogether.

Your results look different from your customers’

Google’s results change with location and device. Searching from your own office may show different results from a customer across town. Search Console shows the searches your site actually appears for, and how often.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Add your site to Google Search Console and verify it.
  2. Check the Pages report for pages that aren’t indexed, and read the reason Google gives.
  3. Make sure no noindex setting or robots.txt rule is blocking the pages you want found.
  4. Submit your sitemap, and use URL Inspection to request indexing for your most important pages.
  5. Check Manual actions and Security issues in Search Console.
  6. Give each main service its own clear, useful page, and explain the areas you serve.
  7. Link to your site from your Google Business Profile, social pages and local directories.
  8. Give it time, and keep improving. Our guide on how long SEO takes explains why.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for a new website to show up on Google?

Often a few days to several weeks for Google to find and add it, though it varies. Showing up for competitive searches takes much longer.

Why does my site show up for my business name but not my services?

Searching your own name is easy for Google to match. Service searches have far more competition, and Google needs clear pages about each service and area, plus signs that your business is trusted, before it shows you there.

Can I pay Google to show my website?

You can pay for Google Ads, which appear as sponsored results. You can’t pay Google to appear in the regular results.

My site used to show up and now it doesn’t. What happened?

Common causes are a site redesign that changed page addresses without redirects, a noindex setting left on after an update, technical problems, or competitors improving their own sites. Search Console usually points to the cause.

Does a Google Business Profile help my website show up?

It helps your business appear in the map results, and the link on it helps Google find your website. The two work best together.
