In short: Local SEO is the work that helps a small business show up when people nearby search for what it offers, both in the map results and in the regular results below them. It comes down to a complete Google Business Profile, a website with clear pages for your services and the areas you serve, the same business details everywhere online, and real reviews from real customers. Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance, distance and prominence.
What is local SEO?
Regular SEO is about showing up on Google for searches anywhere. Local SEO is about showing up for searches with a local need, like “plumber near me” or “dentist in Danbury.” For those searches, Google often shows a map with a short list of businesses at the top, then the regular list of websites below.
For most small businesses that serve one area, local searches are the ones that turn into calls. Someone searching for a roofer in their town is usually ready to hire one.
How does local SEO work?
Google’s own help page on improving your local ranking names three main factors:
- Relevance: how well your business matches what the person searched for. A complete profile and clear service pages help Google understand what you do.
- Distance: how far your business is from the person searching, or from the place named in the search. You can’t change where you are, but you can be clear about the areas you serve.
- Prominence: how well known your business is. Google looks at things like reviews, links and mentions across the web, and how your website appears in regular search results.
Local SEO is the work of making each of those signals as clear and strong as it honestly can be.
The main parts of local SEO
Your Google Business Profile
This is the listing that shows in Google Maps and the map results. Fill in every part: the right category, your services, hours, service area, photos and a clear description. Keep it current, and answer reviews and questions.
Your website
Your site should have a clear page for each main service and, if you serve several towns, pages that explain your work in those areas. Each page needs a clear title, useful words written for customers, and an easy way to call or get a quote. It also has to load fast and work well on phones, since that’s where most local searches happen.
The same business details everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number should match on your website, your Google profile and directories like Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp and your local chamber of commerce. Different details in different places can confuse both Google and customers.
Reviews
Reviews help customers decide, and they’re part of how Google judges prominence. Ask happy customers to leave one, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to every review, good or bad. Never buy reviews or offer something in return for them, which breaks Google’s rules.
Local links and mentions
Links and mentions from other local websites, like a chamber of commerce, a local news story, a sponsor page or a supplier, help show Google that your business is real and active in your area.
A simple local SEO checklist
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile, and fill in every section.
- Make sure your name, address and phone number match everywhere they appear.
- Build a clear page on your website for each main service.
- Explain the areas you serve, with real details about your work there.
- Make your site fast and easy to use on a phone.
- Ask for reviews regularly, and reply to them.
- List your business on the main directories and local groups you belong to.
- Track your progress in Google Search Console and your Business Profile.
Common local SEO mistakes
- An incomplete or out-of-date Business Profile, like old hours or the wrong category.
- Adding keywords or town names to your business name on your profile when they aren’t part of your real name. Google can suspend profiles for this.
- Dozens of near-identical town pages with only the town name changed. They add little and can hurt more than help.
- Fake or paid reviews, which can lead to reviews being removed or the profile being penalized.
- One page that lists every service instead of a clear page for each.
- Giving up too early. Local SEO builds over time. Our guide on how long SEO takes explains why.
Can you do local SEO yourself?
Yes, a lot of it. Filling in your Business Profile, asking for reviews and keeping your details consistent are things any owner can do. The harder parts are building and improving the website itself, writing strong service and area pages, fixing technical problems and tracking what’s working. That’s where many businesses bring in help.
Rather have it done for you?
Local SEO isn’t one job. It’s a profile to keep current, pages to write, reviews to ask for, details to keep in sync and numbers to watch, every month, on top of running your business. That’s the part we take off your plate.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a website for local SEO, or just a Google Business Profile?
A profile alone can bring some calls, but a website gives Google far more to understand about your services and areas, and it’s where people go to check you out before they call. The two work best together.
Can I do local SEO without a storefront?
Yes. Businesses that go to their customers, like contractors and cleaners, can set a service area on their Business Profile and hide their address.
How do I get more Google reviews?
Ask every happy customer, ideally right after the job, and send them a direct link to your review page. Make it quick and easy, and thank people when they leave one.
Does social media help local SEO?
Not directly in Google’s local results. It can still help people find and trust your business, and an active page is one more place your details appear.
How long does local SEO take?
It depends on your competition, your starting point and how steadily the work is done. There’s no fixed timeline, and no one can promise when results will come.
